New Mexico Prevention Generalist Training (Specially added workshop)
March 5-9
This five-day workshop is designed to provide new and returning prevention workers a strong foundation in the basic principles of current alcohol, tobacco and drug prevention practices. The workshop covers prevention certification basic pharmacology, effective program approaches, cultural competency, development of multiple long-term strategies with targeted groups, effective prevention programming components, and program evaluation.

Developmental Assets: A Strength-Based Approach for Prevention
March 9, 9 am 5 pm • Albuquerque
This interactive workshop is designed for educators, health professionals and others working with youth to prevent high-risk behaviors, especially substance abuse. The workshop will introduce the research-based Developmental Assets framework, demonstrate the power of strength-based practices and invite participants to become asset builders in their personal and professional life. Participants will analyze current practices from an assets perspective and walk away with ideas, tools, skills and strategies that they can use immediately.
As a result of participating in this training, participants will:
- Understand the asset framework and its power to protect against high-risk behaviors and promote thriving behaviors;
- Relate brain research to strength-based practice;
- Examine strength-based practices through the asset-building lens;
- Explore strategies for building assets and gain asset-building skills;
- Explore resources for on-going support; and
- Develop an action plan and share a personal commitment to act.

Engaging Youth and Future Leaders in Coalition Efforts
March 16, 9 am 5 pm • Las Cruces
This workshop takes a look at the steps needed to include youth in community coalitions, advisory boards and neighborhoods associations. Participants will explore what it means for youth to be really included and the benefits derived from having them involved. We will be using various community mobilization models to see how youth can be woven in to help coalitions, have more youth represented, and still be effective. This workshop will be very interactive and give participants activities to use when trying to help adults and youth understand the meaning of coalition building and community mobilization.

- Empowerment issues around healing work
- Safety issues around healing work
- The steps involved in the healing process
- Sharing and educating your culture with the outside community
Strategic Prevention Framework: Step 3 Planning

This workshop will provide the information needed to develop a comprehensive, data-driven strategic plan a plan that can also be used as a management tool. The SPF Strategic Plan is primarily based on the knowledge gained and data gathered during the assessment and capacity phases of this process. Plan components will include the NM SPF SIG Logic Model; community-wide, evidence-based strategies; objectives/activities; and plans for evaluation, capacity development, cultural competency and sustainability.
